AJAX issue when viewing notifications

I'm apparently the queen of breaking website code around the household (at least according to my husband). I have some issues getting to see my notifications and typically Firefox will go through the "not responding" phase before it straightens itself out.

Several times I've gotten the following error message:

I'm currently using Firefox 30, the most recent version.

Hi Brenda, I think this was probably related to some technical difficulties we were experiencing on the site a little while back... are you still having this issue, or are things working okay for you now?

I'm still getting it occasionally when I try to view my notifications. Usually once I refresh the page (and it takes a few seconds to load), I can continue on with what I was doing.

I get this exact same ajax error. I'm still having it as of tonight. It's not sporadic for me. It's consistently every time for the past couple months.
I'm using Chrome and windows 8

Just to up the ante, this is what the site looks like for me now:

I've been getting an AJAX error randomly for the last couple days and just got another one a few minutes ago. I'll see if I can grab a screenshot the next time it pops up. I didn't think to do that before I came into the forums to see if anyone else was having issues.

I was uploading for Marisa and I was logged out and then it gave me an AJAX error:

The page at upload.digitalscrapbook.com says:

An AJAX HTTP request terminated abnormally.
Debugging information follows.
Path: http://upload.digitalscrapbook.com/modal_forms/ajax/webform/36630
StatusText: error
ResponseText:
ReadyState: 0

Okay, I made a little tweak to the site that might fix this. Please let me know if it helps, or if you continue to receive these errors. Thanks!

I haven't gotten any more errors but my forums are still broken like in the previous screenshot (including not being able to open notifications from the forums)

Hm... sorry about that Brenda. Does using a different browser make any difference? If so, you may want to reset your main browser by following the steps listed here: http://feedback.digitalscrapbook.com/knowledgebase/articles/352532-general-tip-to-fix-many-problems-update-or-reset

So that was scary but it worked. Thank you so much for all the troubleshooting. I had a feeling it was going to come down to that.

On the bright side, I am twice as appreciative of how *pretty* DigitalScrapbook.com is now smiley

@Jordan: Your little "tweaks" seem to have made my errors go away. smiley TYSVM

nope spoke too soon... i'm still getting the error smiley

Shawna, what causes that error to come up for you? Does it pop up randomly, or only when you do some specific action, etc.?

Have you tried the steps listed at http://feedback.digitalscrapbook.com/knowledgebase/articles/352532-general-tip-to-fix-many-problems-update-or-reset ?

Bah. I just got an error while I was sitting on the main page of the site. smiley

An AJAX HTTP request terminated abnormally.

Mariah: what operating system and browser are you using?

I'm using Chrome... It usually happens ONLY when I open the see all notifications button at the bottom of the 2-3 it shows. From that page when I click to open the notification to go to the thread, that is when I get the error. I usually have to click a second time and then it goes on through. It has happened ever day pretty much since you mentioned we all got on notifications a few months back. EXCEPT for Sunday 27th (1am 'ish) and today (Tues 29th 1 am 'ish). I typically log in around midnight for about 1/2 - 1 hour...
After reading about resetting Chrome back to default and ALL that I would lose that would be shut off, erased, or reset, I may just keep dealing with the error. LoL I have too many pinned tabs, cookies, blah-blahs, & so-ons... that would be the worse of the two for me to deal with... hee hee
BUT I have had two days it worked fine... one when you mentioned tweaks and then tonight.

Jordan, I'm using Windows 8.1 with Chrome for my default browser.

@Jordan: I'm using the exact same as Mariah and I'm on a laptop if that makes any difference.
@Mariah: Does yours happen at other times on the site or dealing with the notifications, like myself?

I too have been getting these AJAX issues intermittently. I'm using Windows 7 with Chrome as my default browser. I wish I had thought to copy the popup error to paste here. I will try to do that if it occurs again...

Moments ago, I received the longest one ever. It was a long column of code that spanded almost to the bottom of my screen. The only thing I can recall is that it stated that the status was forbidden and my screen froze for maybe 10 seconds before it logged me out.

The incident occurred when I realized that I hadn't logged out as usual. I reopened the website to logon and for a few seconds all appeared as usual and I was still logged in. I believe it was when I clicked on the greyed out section of my notifications button, that suddenly the AJAX issue came up and the loading of notifications kept lingering until it logged me out. I don't recall that this issue is relative to whether or not there are new notifications in my case...

I got an AJAX issue this AM, although it was not related to notifications like last time. I was not logged in and doing a search on grunge. I selected one of the results and after it loaded, about 10 seconds later, I decided to return to the results page by clicking on the back button when simultaneously your popup reminder to signup for the newsletter was starting to load, it stalled and the AJAX popup occurred.

Here is the error message:

An AJAX HTTP request terminated abnormally.
Debugging information follows.
Path: https://www.digitalscrapbook.com/modal_forms/ajax/webform/36630
StatusText: error
ResponseText:
ReadyState: 0

I hope this is helpful.

@Shawna, it just seems to happen randomly and I haven't seen a connection to anything I do on the site in particular.

@Mariah: It sounds like you and Cathy are having similar issues. I don't ever have issues anywhere else with it... Mine is very "focused" LoL
Hopefully this will let Jordan know something at least for you two. Did you both go through the resetting of your browser that Jordan listed above in the post to me to see if it eliminates your problems especially since y'alls are more random... It might help. smiley

While it has been random for me too, at least this AM I've seen a little more consistency. Twice I have received the exact same error as described in my last post which seems pertinent to webform 36630. It was consecutive, just before and right after logging in to the site.

I have checked my browser settings and all seems to be functioning well otherwise with little or no other obvious issues, but I will see if resetting them will help. Thanks Shawna for the reminder tip!

Just to add some info: I´m on Windows 7 Google chrome. I receive the Ajax error when I click on the notifications icon bnefore the site is fully loaded, specially on main screen. It has been happening from a long time but usually don´t really bothers me.

And, from one month or 45 days for before, the site started to get in conflict with my bank protection system extension. Every time I open the site, or open a new window/tab to follow a link inside DigitalScrapbook.com, it first gives me a pop up saying my browser has crashed, and if I want to restart it. It doesn´t matter if I choose yes or no, it doesn´t really close the software, just freezes for 5 seconds and says, in a yellow message on the top of the screen, that the app of my bank stopped working - and I don´t need to be using that app for it to happen.

Also, the site is slow to me, the slowest I open often.

It seems likely that this error is caused by some interaction between the site and a user's browser / the extensions they have installed. I use Chrome, and have tested the site extensively with debug tools, and have not been able to reproduce this issue smiley .

If you can try resetting your browser as per these instructions, see if that fixes the issue, then re-enable your extensions/add-ons one by one, we may be able to figure out if there is a particular extension that is causing this.

Note: resetting your browser will NOT delete any of your bookmarks or extensions: it will leave your bookmarks in place, and simply disable your extensions temporarily (they will still be there for you to re-enable), as well as setting the browser back to its default state.

Sorry for the trouble, and thanks for the continued bug reports: I hope we can get to the bottom of this soon!

I'm still getting the message occasionally, even after resetting Firefox smiley

As an update to my last post about 2 weeks ago...

I have not had any issues to speak of regarding the AJAX error relative to viewing notifications since my last post until a short while ago, occurring under the same circumstances as described previously when attempting to view my notifications. Last time I was remiss in obtaining the lengthy popup error and acknowledged that I will try to capture the error should it occur again...

Fortunately, this time I managed to capture the long error code with the forbidden status which spanned an entire column length on my PC as was mentioned but hope that it will prove to be of some use in resolving this issue.

Due to the fact that there doesn't appear to be a convenient mode of uploading / inserting image(s) that does not involve the URL, rather uploading an image file seems to be only through the use of the site contact form, I decided to send a similar message there with the attachment for review.

BTW, the AJAX issues aren't that bothersome as they are intermittent and occur more often on some days than others while there are times when I rarely get them at all. Just trying to be helpful...Thank you.

hey jordan, this happens due to they way Drupal core handles terminated ajax calls, e.g. if you are on a page, and mnc loads in the background for new messages, if the http call is still active and processing and you switch to a different page e.g. by clicking a link, this call will be terminated and the error will popup. See https://www.drupal.org/node/1232416 for more on this.

@Andre: thanks for the tip!

I have just pushed some changes to the site that should minimize/prevent these "AJAX HTTP request terminated abnormally" errors.

To all of you who have seen these errors: please let me know if you continue to see them, or if things improve. Thanks!
