Description
After checking out the wheat beer and other varieties at Millstream Brewing, we tour the Amana Heritage Museum, learning about the origination of the “Community of True Inspiration” in Germany in 1714, their move to New York in 1842 and to Iowa County in 1855. After living communally for decades, the community voted in 1932 to change to private ownership, which continues today. Chatting with the museum guide, we learn that her grandmother grew up in the colonies and indicated what she missed most was the camaraderie of the women in the communal kitchens. The museum contains interesting exhibits about the farming, livestock raising, wine-making, large communal kitchens, churches, and schools. Exhibits display old farm and community implements, such as a rhubarb grinder (for making rhubarb wine), and the toys and classrooms for children. The next day we go by the Amana Community Church in Homestead but are unable to go in to tour, as it is Sunday. May 30-31, 2015
