#TitlesofChrist December 26: Lion
The earliest reference to Jesus as a lion is found in Genesis, where Jacob (Israel) blesses each of his sons. When he arrives at Judah, his fourth born, Jacob says:
Judah is a lion's cub;
from the prey, my son, you have gone up.
He stooped down; he crouched as a lion
and as a lioness; who dares rouse him?
In Rev 5 Jesus is the lamb and lion. This is one of the best allegories in the New Testament of the dual role of Christ, who came first as a Lamb sacrificed for sin and returns as a Lion to execute judgment, rule the world, and bring peace. He is our deliverer who will defeat all the powers of evil. The Lamb died to allow our adoption; through his pain and suffering, death brought forth the Lion.
